Carmina Burana — A Medieval Masterpiece Meets the Challenges of Today
What happens when Carl Orff’s monumental Carmina Burana meets the realities of young people’s lives today?
At the Colisée de Roubaix, this ambitious stage production transforms one of the most iconic works in the classical repertoire into an immersive journey through the pressures, vulnerabilities and inner struggles of contemporary youth.
Created to mark the 25th anniversary of the Choir of the Catholic University of Lille, the production brings together 280 performers: 200 choristers, 60 orchestral musicians and 20 student dancers and actors from Campus Créatif. The Orchestre Symphonique Européen, conducted by Pierre-Yves Gronier, provides the musical force behind this powerful collaboration, with artistic direction by Clément Violini.
Drawing inspiration from the medieval poems that gave rise to Orff’s composition, the production takes an unexpected turn into the world of video games. What initially appears to be a familiar environment becomes a system of challenges, exposing the realities of constant pressure, loneliness, mental overload, addiction and the fear of failure.
The result is more than a musical spectacle. By connecting medieval texts with contemporary experiences, Carmina Burana explores the fragile balance between individual struggles and collective life. Its focus on psychosocial risks gives the production a particularly relevant and deeply human dimension.
A meeting of music, choral singing, dance and theatre — and a bold reinterpretation of a timeless work that asks how we navigate the challenges of our own lives.
280 artists. One stage. A timeless work with a contemporary message.
